“Quo Vadis, Domine?” “Lord, where are you going?”
St. Peter and St. Paul are the principal pillars of the Church. That is why this Sunday we celebrate the feast of their martyrdom, replacing the normal readings for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Today’s Gospel explains the basis of our faith as the acceptance of Jesus as the Christ, our Lord and Savior. It also tells us that Christ Jesus became our Savior by his suffering and death and resurrection. This famous profession of Faith by Peter took place at Caesarea Philippi, at present called Banias, twenty-five miles northeast of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus realized that if his disciples did not know who he really was, then his entire ministry, suffering and death would be useless. Hence, he decided to ask a question in two parts. 1) “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?” 2) “But who do you say that I am?” Their answer to the first question was: “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Peter volunteered to answer the second question saying: “You are the Christ (Messiah) the Son of the living God.” Jesus confirmed Peter’s insight as a special revelation from God. “No mere man has revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” www.frtonyshomilies.com
“¿Quo Vadis, Domine?” “Señor, ¿a dónde vas?”
San Pedro y San Pablo son los pilares principales de la Iglesia. Por eso, este domingo celebramos la fiesta de su martirio, reemplazando las lecturas habituales del Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. El Evangelio de hoy explica que la base de nuestra fe es la aceptación de Jesús como el Cristo, nuestro Señor y Salvador. También nos dice que Cristo Jesús se convirtió en nuestro Salvador por su sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección. Esta famosa profesión de fe de Pedro tuvo lugar en Cesárea de Filipo, a veinticinco millas al noreste del Mar de Galilea. Jesús se dio cuenta de que si sus discípulos no sabían quién era realmente, entonces todo su ministerio, sufrimiento y muerte serían inútiles. Por lo tanto, decidió hacer una pregunta en dos partes. 1) “¿Quién dicen los hombres que es el Hijo del Hombre?” 2) “Pero ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Su respuesta a la primera pregunta fue: “Unos dicen que Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías, otros que Jeremías o alguno de los profetas”. Pedro se ofreció a responder la segunda pregunta diciendo: “Tú eres el Cristo (Mesías) el Hijo de Dios viviente”. Jesús confirmó la percepción de Pedro como una revelación especial de Dios. “Ningún hombre te ha revelado esto, sino mi Padre celestial”.
