Be Prepared, for at an Hour You do not Expect,

the Son of Man Will Come.

               Jesus’ instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue in the stories and sayings found in today’s Gospel. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heaven where it will not wear out or be destroyed. We must be like servants waiting for the master’s return from a wedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like. Today’s the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man—eating, drinking, and making merry—we will not have a place in the kingdom. Estén Preparados, Porque a la Hora que Menos Esperan, Vendrá el Hijo del Hombre.

Las instrucciones de Jesús sobre cómo estar listos para el juicio venidero continúan en las historias y dichos del Evangelio de hoy. El antídoto contra la ansiedad que provoca el juicio venidero es renunciar a nuestras posesiones y proveer para las necesidades de los demás. Nuestro tesoro estará en el cielo, donde no se desgastará ni se destruirá. Debemos ser como siervos que esperan el regreso del amo de un banquete de bodas, que, incluso ahora, puede durar unos días en Oriente Medio. Debemos estar atentos para que, incluso si el amo llega después de la medianoche, estemos listos para recibirlo. Así será la venida del Hijo del Hombre. Las parábolas de hoy nos recuerdan que debemos estar haciendo nuestro trabajo cuando llegue el amo. Si hacemos nuestro trabajo, nuestra recompensa será grande. Pero si nos relajamos, descuidamos nuestros deberes y comenzamos a actuar como el rico avaro —comiendo, bebiendo y divirtiéndonos—, no tendremos lugar en el reino. Vigilancia significa vivir de una manera tan coherentemente moral y obediente que siempre estemos dispuestos a dar cuenta a Dios de cómo hemos vivido.
