People Will Come and Take Their Place in the Kingdom of God
Today’s Gospel reading is the third of three parables in chapter 13 that deal with the theme of the unexpected reversals brought by the Kingdom of God. As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem. He is teaching as he goes. A question from the crowd gives Jesus the chance to make a prophetic statement. Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remaining to enter through the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won’t be strong enough. He then moves to a parable about another door. (The translation says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Those who do not make it through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wailing and grinding of teeth. The image of the door is replaced in the final verses of the parable with the image of the heavenly banquet. In the end, many will be saved, but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom. www.loyolapress.com
La Gente Vendrá y Ocupará su Lugar en
el Reino de Dios
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy es la tercera de tres parábolas del capítulo 13 que abordan el tema de los cambios inesperados que trae el Reino de Dios. Al comienzo de esta parábola, Lucas nos recuerda que Jesús se dirige a Jerusalén. Enseña mientras camina. Una pregunta de la multitud le da a Jesús la oportunidad de hacer una declaración profética. Jesús responde que deben esforzarse en el tiempo restante para entrar por la puerta estrecha, porque muchos intentarán entrar, pero no tendrán la fuerza suficiente. Luego, se dirige a una puerta que se puede detener. Quienes no logren atravesar la puerta estrecha serán arrojados a un lugar donde habrá llanto y rechinar de dientes. La imagen de la puerta se reemplaza en los versículos finales de la parábola con la imagen del banquete celestial. Al final, muchos se salvarán, pero muchos que pensaban que se salvarían no lo harán.
