The Kingdom of God
How could Peter, the apostles, and Jesus’ other close companions have got his mission so totally wrong? We see it in this week’s Gospel, but the truth is that from the very beginning and right up to his death, the apostles were more or less clueless. That may sound a bit harsh, but Jesus saying to Peter, “Get behind me Satan…” is also harsh. To publicly castigate the man chosen to be leader of the group indicates, the frustration and maybe loneliness Jesus felt as he realized his mission would end in his death and struggled to find even a hint of understanding in Peter and the others. The Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ is counter cultural. It goes against everything the world holds as important – power, wealth, authority, entitlement, prosperity, riches, influence and on and on it goes. The Kingdom of God is for the poor, the meek, the gentle, those who suffer, those who forgive, those who mourn, the downtrodden, the powerless. As Christians we are called to lives which witness to the resurrection, to the values of the Kingdom Jesus died to share with us.www.oblates.ie
El Reino de Dios
¿Cómo pudieron Pedro, los apóstoles y otros compañeros cercanos de Jesús haber entendido tan mal su misión? Lo vemos en el Evangelio de esta semana, pero la verdad es que desde el principio y hasta su muerte, los apóstoles estaban más o menos desorientados. Puede que suene un poco duro, pero que Jesús le diga a Pedro: “Apártate de mi, Satanás…” también es duro. Castigar públicamente al hombre elegido para ser líder del grupo indica la frustración y tal vez la soledad que sintió Jesús al darse cuenta de que su misión terminaría en su muerte y luchar por encontrar incluso un atisbo de comprensión en Pedro y los demás. El Reino de Dios, el Reino del “Sermón del Monte” es contracultural. Va en contra de todo lo que el mundo considera importante: poder, riqueza, autoridad, derecho, prosperidad, riquezas, influencia y así sucesivamente. El Reino de Dios es para los pobres, los mansos, los gentiles, los que sufren, los que perdonan, los que lloran, los oprimidos, los impotentes. Como cristianos, estamos llamados a llevar una vida que dé testimonio de la resurrección y de los valores del Reino que Jesús quiso compartir con nosotros. www.oblates.ie
