The Suffering Servant
In today’s Gospel, Jesus begins to prepare his disciples for what is to come. He identifies himself with the “just one’ in the Book of Wisdom which we heard in today’s first reading. He will be put to the test to give proof of his gentleness and patience. He will be condemned to a shameful death – and God will take care of him. Mark comments that the disciples did not understand the saying and were afraid to question him. Apparently, they distracted themselves by arguing about who was the greatest among them. Jesus was not distracted and continued to teach them about himself and how they were to live. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Jesus is among them as servant – the “suffering servant.” The child Jesus places in their midst and embraces is how they are to receive him: peaceably, gently, without inconstancy or insincerity, open to wisdom from above. Jesus comes to us as the “suffering servant” – Savior and Lord. He invites us to embrace him as he did the child. May we not allow ourselves to become distracted by petty, personal concerns. Let us accept Jesus as the First and Only in our lives, for he has shown us how to be the last and the servant of all. www.www.oblates.org
El Siervo Sufriente
En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús comienza a preparar a sus discípulos para lo que está por venir. Se identifica con el “justo” del Libro de la Sabiduría que escuchamos en la primera lectura de hoy. Será puesto a prueba para dar prueba de su mansedumbre y paciencia. Será condenado a una muerte vergonzosa, y Dios se ocupará de él. Marcos comenta que los discípulos no entendieron lo que dijo y tenían miedo de preguntarle. Aparentemente, se distrajeron discutiendo sobre quién era el más grande entre ellos. Jesús no se distrajo y continuó enseñándoles sobre sí mismo y cómo debían vivir. “Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que sea el último de todos y el servidor de todos”. Jesús está entre ellos como siervo, el “siervo sufriente”. El niño que Jesús pone en medio de ellos y abraza es como deben recibirlo: pacíficamente, con dulzura, sin inconstancia ni insinceridad, abiertos a la sabiduría de lo alto. Jesús viene a nosotros como el “siervo sufriente”, Salvador y Señor. Nos invita a abrazarlo como abrazó al niño. No nos dejemos distraer por preocupaciones personales y mezquinas. Aceptemos a Jesús como el Primero y el Único en nuestras vidas, pues Él nos ha mostrado cómo ser los últimos y los servidores de todos. www.www.oblates.org
