The Gospel this Sunday serves as a bracing wake-up call as we return once more into Ordinary Time. After the merriment of Christmas — packages and parties, carols and cooking, broken toys and broken diets — we get down to the hard work of ordinary life. There are lights to unplug, tinsel to toss. We need to get back to work. That includes our challenge to put the message of Christmas into practice — to carry a proclamation of joy and hope into the world and to dwell, for at least a little longer, in a sense of possibility and peace. We also need to hear once more the Baptist’s cry in the wilderness. Keep your eyes open, he tells us. The Lamb of God is here. Pay attention! When John pointed out Jesus to those around him, he was not only telling them that the one they had been waiting for had arrived; he also signaled that the great work was now beginning. Things were about to change. It was time to live, pray and love differently. El Evangelio de este domingo nos sirve como un llamado de atención revitalizador al regresar al Tiempo Ordinario.  Después de la alegría de la Navidad —regalos y fiestas, villancicos y banquetes, juguetes rotos y dietas olvidadas— volvemos al trabajo arduo de la vida cotidiana. Hay luces que desconectar, adornos que guardar. Necesitamos volver al trabajo. Esto incluye el desafío de poner en práctica el mensaje de la Navidad: llevar un mensaje de alegría y esperanza al mundo y permanecer, al menos un poco más, en un estado de posibilidad y paz. También necesitamos escuchar una vez más el clamor del Bautista en el desierto. Mantengan los ojos abiertos, nos dice. El Cordero de Dios está aquí. ¡Presten atención! Cuando Juan señaló a Jesús a quienes lo rodeaban, no solo les decía que había llegado aquel a quien esperaban; también indicaba que la gran obra estaba a punto de comenzar. Las cosas estaban a punto de cambiar. Era el momento de vivir, orar y amar de manera diferente.
