In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree which was planted but bore no fruit for three years. Rather than tearing the tree down, the gardener insists on giving it the chance to grow for one more year. He hopes the tree may strengthen and bear fruit, if only he fertilizes and reworks the ground around it first. This parable comes right after Jesus encourages those before him to repent, or rather, warns them to repent, so they do not perish. Perhaps we are being invited to examine the ground in which we are planted and are trying to grow, in this same spirit of penance. We’ve been given a chance to till, cultivate, and fertilize the ground in which we find ourselves, too. What habits, passions, mindsets, judgments allow you to bear fruit, and which keep you barren? Jesus does not wish for us to become like trees cut down only to perish. In His mercy and love, he allows us to rework the soil in which we are planted time and time again, so that we may grow upward and ever-closer to him. In the Gospel this week, we are encouraged to reflect, to pray, and to repent, so that our lives may become rich and abundant with fruit that gives glory and praise to God.
 

En el Evangelio de este domingo, Jesús cuenta la parábola de la higuera que fue plantada, pero no dio fruto durante tres años. En lugar de derribarla, el jardinero insiste en darle la oportunidad de crecer un año más. Espera que el árbol se fortalezca y dé fruto, si tan solo fertiliza y renueva la tierra a su alrededor primero. Esta parábola viene justo después de que Jesús anima a quienes lo precedieron a arrepentirse, o mejor dicho, les advierte que se arrepientan para que no perezcan. Quizás se nos invita a examinar la tierra en la que estamos plantados y tratamos de crecer, con este mismo espíritu de penitencia. Se nos ha dado la oportunidad de labrar, cultivar y fertilizar la tierra en la que nos encontramos también. ¿Qué hábitos, pasiones, mentalidades y juicios te permiten dar fruto y cuáles te mantienen estéril? Jesús no quiere que seamos como árboles talados que solo perecen. En su misericordia y amor, nos permite rehacer la tierra donde estamos plantados una y otra vez, para que crezcamos hacia arriba y nos acerquemos cada vez más a él. En el Evangelio de esta semana, se nos anima a reflexionar, orar y arrepentirnos, para que nuestras vidas se llenen de frutos que glorifiquen y alaben a Dios.
