This Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, which marks the 50th day after Easter and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and those gathered with them in the upper room in Jerusalem, as indicated in our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Our readings this week present two different accounts of how the apostles received the Spirit: one through “tongues as of fire” and another through Jesus breathing the Spirit upon them. We often find various descriptions of the same event in scripture, and we must remember that what we read was written by different authors at different times. St. John indicates, Jesus “breathed” the Holy Spirit on the apostles and commissioned them: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” to go forth and proclaim the gospel to all nations. This is the beginning of the priesthood and the church’s mission to spread the gospel throughout the world, as the church is enabled to do so through the power of the Holy Spirit.  The apostles, whom Jesus “breathed” upon, were the first bishops of the church, and the authority they received through the Holy Spirit has been passed on, through 2000 years of history, to their successors, the present bishops of the church.
 

Este domingo celebramos la fiesta de Pentecostés, que marca el 50.º día después de Pascua y conmemora el descenso del Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles y los reunidos con ellos en el aposento alto de Jerusalén, como se indica en nuestra primera lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles.  Nuestras lecturas de esta semana presentan dos relatos diferentes de cómo los apóstoles recibieron el Espíritu: uno a través de “lenguas como de fuego” y otro cuando Jesús sopló el Espíritu sobre ellos. A menudo encontramos varias descripciones del mismo evento en las Escrituras, y debemos recordar que lo que leemos fue escrito por diferentes autores en diferentes momentos. San Juan indica que Jesús “sopló” el Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles y los comisionó: “Como el Padre me envió, también yo los envío” para ir y proclamar el evangelio a todas las naciones. Este es el comienzo del sacerdocio y de la misión de la iglesia de difundir el evangelio por todo el mundo, como la iglesia puede hacerlo mediante el poder del Espíritu Santo. Los apóstoles, sobre quienes Jesús “sopló”, fueron los primeros obispos de la iglesia, y la autoridad que recibieron por medio del Espíritu Santo ha sido transmitida, a través de 2000 años de historia, a sus sucesores, los obispos actuales de la iglesia.
