Jesus Outlines the Costs and Rewards of Discipleship
Today’s Gospel is the conclusion of the instructions and consolations that we have heard Jesus offering to his disciples during the past few weeks. In this passage, Jesus summarizes both the costs of discipleship and its rewards. Once again our understanding of the Gospel is strengthened by considering the context in which it was written and the perspective of Matthew’s audience. Choosing life with Christ means that every relationship we have must be understood from a new perspective. In today’s Gospel, Jesus explains the difficulties of discipleship, yet reveals that those who welcome the disciples have also welcomed him. Today’s Gospel also highlights for us the importance of hospitality in the Christian life. To welcome another in Jesus’ name is to extend hospitality to Jesus himself. We have many opportunities in our daily life to reach out to others, to be a welcoming presence and a sign of God’s love.

El evangelio de hoy es la conclusión de las instrucciones y consolaciones que hemos escuchado a
Jesús ofrecer a sus discípulos durante las últimas semanas. En este pasaje, Jesús resume tanto los costos del discipulado como sus recompensas. Una vez más, nuestra comprensión del Evangelio se fortalece al considerar el contexto en el que fue escrito y la perspectiva de la audiencia de Mateo. Elegir la vida con Cristo significa que cada relación que tenemos debe ser entendida desde una nueva perspectiva. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús explica las dificultades del discipulado, pero revela que quien acoge a los discípulos también lo ha acogido a él. El Evangelio de hoy también nos destaca la importancia de la hospitalidad en la vida cristiana. Acoger a otro en el nombre de Jesús es brindar hospitalidad al mismo Jesús. Tenemos muchas oportunidades en nuestra vida diaria para llegar a los demás, para ser una presencia acogedora y un signo del amor de Dios.
