Fraternal Correction
In today’s Gospel, God demands that a sinner not be tried, convicted, or sentenced in absentia, because
it’s the sinner’s welfare that is at stake as much as the welfare of the one who is sinned against. In our
modern throw-away culture, we may not wish to love the criminal, but only the victim. Jesus is calling us to love both, as He Himself did on His Cross. Here’s a practical suggestion for the next time you need to offer fraternal correction. If you struggle to offer fraternal correction, whether because your heart is fearful or callous, go first to God in the Sacrament of Confession. Admit there your own sinfulness to
Him who is the Father of both you and the one whom you must correct. Being on the receiving end of Divine Mercy will help form you into a bearer of mercy. The experience will also help you approach your brother with a love akin to that which Jesus showed on the Cross. This is the love that effects communion within the Church, and that makes Jesus present in the midst of us.

Corrección Fraterna
En el Evangelio de hoy, Dios exige que un pecador no sea juzgado, declarado culpable o sentenciado en ausencia, porque lo que está en juego es el bienestar del pecador tanto como el bienestar de aquel contra quien se pecó. En nuestra cultura moderna del descarte, es posible que no deseemos amar al criminal, sino sólo a la víctima. Jesús nos llama a amar a ambos, como Él mismo lo hizo en Su Cruz. He aquí una sugerencia práctica para la próxima vez que necesites ofrecer corrección fraterna. Si te cuesta ofrecer corrección fraterna, ya sea porque tu corazón es temeroso o insensible, acude primero a Dios en el Sacramento de la Confesión. Admite allí tu propia pecaminosidad ante Aquel que es el Padre de ambos y aquel a quien debes corregir. Estar en el lado receptor de la Divina Misericordia te ayudará a convertirte en un portador de misericordia. La experiencia también te ayudará a acercarte a tu hermano con un amor similar al que Jesús mostró en la Cruz. Este es el amor que efectúa la comunión dentro de la Iglesia y que hace presente a Jesús en medio de nosotros.
