Would That You Might Meet Us Doing Right
As we begin another liturgical year, the readings pick up right where we left off last week: focusing on the second coming of Christ. Whereas in the gospel, Mark presents Jesus issuing a stern warning “What I say to you I say to all: Watch!”. However, It seems as though Isaiah is reminding God of God’s attributes, as though he were telling God something new: You are mighty, you are our father, you are the potter, you are our redeemer. Yet throughout the reading the prophet also asks for mercy, forgiveness, and for a swift coming in glory. Advent is a time of waiting, and a time of prayer. Isaiah teaches us how to do both at the same time. We and all of God’s creation cry out, “Come, Lord Jesus!” And God says to us, in effect, “I am coming. Are you ready?” Isaiah puts it best: “Would that you might meet us doing right.” Yes, we watch and we wait. But we must do more. In prayer, song, worship, and service, we call upon our good God, and thus we get ourselves ready to meet the Lord at the same time.

Al comenzar otro año litúrgico, las lecturas continúan justo donde las dejamos la semana pasada: en-
focándonos en la segunda venida de Cristo. Mientras que en el evangelio, Marcos presenta a Jesús lanzando una severa advertencia: “Lo que les digo, lo digo a todos: ¡esten atentos!”. Parece como si Isaías le estuviera recordando a Dios los atributos de Dios, como si le estuviera diciendo algo nuevo: Tú eres poderoso, eres nuestro padre, eres el alfarero, eres nuestro redentor. Sin embargo, a lo largo de la lectura, el profeta también pide misericordia, perdón y una pronta venida en gloria. El Adviento es un tiempo de espera y un tiempo de oración. Isaías nos enseña cómo hacer ambas cosas al mismo tiempo. Nosotros y toda la creación de Dios clamamos: “¡Ven, Señor Jesús!” Y Dios nos dice, en efecto: “Ya voy. ¿Estás listo?” Isaías lo expresa mejor: “Ojalá pudieras encontrarnos haciendo lo correcto”. Sí, observamos y esperamos. Pero debemos hacer más. En oración, canto, adoración y servicio, invocamos a nuestro buen Dios y así nos preparamos para encontrarnos con el Señor al mismo tiempo.
