On today’s Feast of the Holy Family, our readings offer us clear instructions for family life. While Paul’s call from the second reading to “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” can seem impossible, the Gospel reminds us that a holy family is not necessarily a picture-perfect one. The Gospel portrays Joseph, Mary, and Jesus uprooted multiple times, racing to Egypt then towards Judea before pivoting to Galilee. Clearly, their holiness did not come from external serenity. Although we are not privy to the details of their interactions, we know that it was unconditional love and the presence of Jesus Christ that earns this family the title of “Holy.”  In the Gospel story, it is Joseph who demonstrates the most vivid posture of total obedience—immediately going wherever the angel tells him to go. He does not dominate his family. Yes, he led Mary and Jesus, but he was not ruling over them. They were all submitting to God. On this feast day, let us ask Joseph, Mary, and Jesus to bless our families and guide our interactions so that the peace of Christ may persist in our hearts, and that we may do all things in the name of Jesus. www.ad-today.com
 

En la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia que celebramos hoy, las lecturas nos ofrecen claras instrucciones para la vida familiar. Si bien el llamado de San Pablo en la segunda lectura a la “compasión, la bondad, la humildad, la mansedumbre y la paciencia” puede parecer imposible,  el Evangelio nos recuerda que una familia santa no es necesariamente una familia perfecta. El Evangelio presenta a José, María y Jesús desarraigados en varias ocasiones, huyendo a Egipto y luego a Judea antes de dirigirse a Galilea. Claramente, su santidad no provenía de una serenidad externa. Aunque no conocemos los detalles de sus interacciones, sabemos que fue el amor incondicional y la presencia de Jesucristo lo que les valió a esta familia el título de “Sagrada”. En el relato del evangelio, es José quien demuestra la actitud más clara de obediencia total, yendo inmediatamente a donde el ángel le indica. No domina a su familia. Si bien guió a María y a Jesús, no los gobernaba. Todos se sometían a Dios. En este día de fiesta, pidamos a José, María y Jesús que bendigan a nuestras familias y guíen nuestras interacciones para que la paz de Cristo permanezca en nuestros corazones y para que hagamos todas las cosas en el nombre de Jesús.
