Follow the Leader
At the time of Jesus the religious leaders of the Jewish people were the Scribe and Pharisees. In front of
the people gathered, Jesus makes a very public condemnation and criticism of these religious leaders. Jesus clearly says for everyone to hear, ‘do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practice what they preach.’ Strong words indeed. Jesus continues his criticism when he says that they always want to take the place of honor at meals and the best front seat in the synagogues. What have these words of Jesus to do with us or say to us today? Jesus is warning us not think of ourselves as being better that other people. We have to be careful not to say one thing and then do the very opposite. We are not
to speak and act in ways so that people will notice us and tell us how wonderful we are. God does not expect us to be perfect. However, we are asked to be genuine, honest and authentic with ourselves, others and God. We are called to follow Jesus who came to serve and not to be served. This is the example we are asked to follow and live by.

Seguir al Líder
En la época de Jesús, los líderes religiosos del pueblo judío eran los escribas y los fariseos. Frente a la
gente reunida, Jesús hace una condena publica y crítica a estos líderes religiosos. Jesús dice claramente para que todos lo escuchen: “No se dejen guiar por lo que hacen, ya que no practican lo que predican”. Palabras realmente fuertes. Jesús continúa su crítica cuando dice que siempre quieren ocupar el lugar de honor en las comidas y el mejor asiento en las sinagogas. ¿Qué tienen que ver con nosotros o
decirnos hoy estas palabras de Jesús? Jesús nos advierte que no nos consideremos mejores que otras personas. Tenemos que tener cuidado de no decir una cosa y luego hacer todo lo contrario. No debemos hablar ni actuar de manera que la gente se fije en nosotros y nos diga lo maravillosos que somos. Dios no espera que seamos perfectos. Sin embargo, se nos pide que seamos genuinos, honestos y auténticos con nosotros mismos, con los demás y con Dios. Estamos llamados a seguir a Jesús que vino a servir y no a ser servido. Este es el ejemplo que se nos pide que sigamos y vivamos.
