Today’s scripture readings from Ezekiel, Paul, and John center on death: death of a nation, death to self, and death of a beloved friend. But the lesson we need to take from today’s scripture is not the inevitability of physical death, with its sorrow and confusion, but the union we must all form with Jesus through faith. We are all called to establish a deep union with Christ in faith. In the first reading today from Ezekiel, the prophet promises a defeated and dispersed nation that they will rise again and experience a new life that springs from the spirit of God. John in his gospel story depicts Jesus as challenging all of us to believe in him. “I am the resurrection and the life” Jesus says, and the question for each of us is: “Do you believe?”  Death does threaten life but it has no power where there is faith. Our challenge is to build a life of faith where our relationship and union with Jesus is so strong that physical death excites little fear in us. As we pray and work for a true conversion of ourselves during Lent and anticipate the joy and peace of the Resurrection and the new life that it promises, let us resolve to face the reality of our own death and the death of those we love with unwavering faith. www.augustinian.org
 

Las lecturas de hoy de Ezequiel, Pablo y Juan se centran en la muerte: la muerte de una nación, la muerte al yo, y la muerte de un amigo amado. Pero la lección que debemos tomar de las Escrituras de hoy no es la inevitabilidad de la muerte física, con su tristeza y confusión, sino la unión que todos estamos llamados a formar con Jesús por medio de la fe. Todos estamos llamados a establecer una unión profunda con Cristo en la fe. En la primera lectura de hoy, el profeta Ezequiel promete a una nación derrotada y dispersa que volverá a levantarse y experimentará una vida nueva que brota del Espíritu de Dios. En el Evangelio, Juan presenta a Jesús desafiándonos a todos a creer en Él: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida”, dice Jesús, y la pregunta para cada uno de nosotros es: “¿Crees esto?” A menudo escuchamos a personas decir que no temen a la muerte, sino al proceso de morir. La muerte sí amenaza la vida, pero no tiene poder donde hay fe. Nuestro desafío es construir una vida de fe en la que nuestra relación y unión con Jesús sea tan fuerte que la muerte física despierte poco temor en nosotros.
