The Transfiguration of the Lord
Every year on the second Sunday of Lent, we are offered the subject of Jesus’ transfiguration. The scene is set in a secluded place, on a high mountain where Jesus led three of his disciples. The transfiguration was an extraordinary spiritual experience in which Jesus tried to convince that only those who give their lives for the sake of love fully realized it. One cannot get into the kingdom of God through shortcuts as Peter would have wanted to do. It is necessary for every disciple to boldly assume the provision of the Master, and agree to give life. Was the experience of the mountain enough to make the three disciples assimilate this truth? The concluding remark of the Evangelist: “They kept this to themselves, although they discussed with one another what ‘to rise from the dead’ could mean.” This leaves us to understand that they were stunned, not convinced, of the revelation received. It is clear that they failed to understand that Jesus was going to give life. God was revealing all his glory, all his love for man. Only the light of Easter and the experiences with the Risen Lord will open wide their eyes.
La Transfiguración del Señor
Cada año, el segundo domingo de Cuaresma, se nos ofrece el tema de la transfiguración de Jesús. La escena se desarrolla en un lugar apartado, en una alta montaña donde Jesús condujo a tres de sus discípulos. La transfiguración fue una experiencia espiritual extraordinaria en la que Jesús trató de convencerlos de que sólo aquellos que daban su vida por amor la realizaban plenamente. No se puede entrar al reino de Dios por atajos como Pedro hubiera querido hacerlo. Es necesario que todo discípulo asuma con valentía la provisión del Maestro y acepte dar la vida. ¿Fue suficiente la experiencia de la montaña para que los tres discípulos asimilaran esta verdad? La observación final del evangelista: “Se lo guardaron para sí, aunque discutían entre ellos lo que podría significar ‘resucitar de entre los muertos'”. Esto nos deja entender que quedaron atónitos, no convencidos, de la revelación recibida. Está claro que no entendieron que Jesús iba a dar vida. Dios estaba revelando toda su gloria, todo su amor por el hombre. Sólo la luz de la Pascua y las experiencias con el Señor Resucitado les abrirán los ojos.
